Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I buy hay from the Producer rather than a Broker? 1. Why should I buy hay from the Producer rather than a Broker? When you buy hay from the Producer, like Babler Farms, we grow, cut, rake, harvest, store and then load the hay onto the delivery truck. This ensures superior quality control. The Broker in many cases never sees the hay for sale, so how can they properly represent it? 2. What kind of hay do we offer? We offer pure Alfalfa hay, mixed Alfalfa hay (which includes 50% Alfalfa and 50% Orchard Grass or 75% Alfalfa and 25% Orchard Grass), Pure Grass hay and Oat hay of all qualities. 3. What size bales do you carry? Currently we carry 3x3 large square hay bales. In the 2009 growing season we will also be packaging 3x4 hay bales as well as 3x3’s. 4. Where is Rock City, IL located? Click here and view our map. 5. What kind of time frame should I expect from the time I order the hay until I receive the hay? In most cases we can deliver the hay to you within a week. However, the more notice you can give us, the better. 6. Is your hay and straw stored inside? Yes. It is all stored in completely enclosed buildings to keep the elements and moisture out. 7. How can I be assured that the hay I receive will be free of dust and mold? At Babler Farms, we grow, cut, rake, harvest, store and then load the hay for sale on the delivery truck. This ensures superior quality control. This also makes it possible to represent the hay second to none. 8. How many tons of hay can you get on a truck? This depends on the kind of hay you order and cutting. The range can be anywhere from 21 ton to 27 ton, usually 23 - 25 ton range. Once you place your hay order, we give an estimate on what you will receive based on previous hay sales and the lot of hay you have chosen. 9. Can I get a split load? Example: a 54 bale load consisting of 27 bales of 1st crop and 27 bales of 4th crop. Yes. We have a state certified full length truck scale on our farm. This makes it simple to ship split loads in any combination. 10. Will Babler Farms deliver the hay or straw personally? Yes. We like to deliver the hay ourselves, which allows us to meet you, the customer. We also work with several professional commercial trucking companies to ensure timely deliveries. 11. Does Babler Farms carry any organic hay? From time to time we can get organic hay from some neighbors, however the supply is very limited. 12. How much does a bale of your wheat straw weigh? Our wheat straw bales usually weigh between 560 lbs to 600 lbs per bale, generally averaging 575 lbs for our 3x3x8 foot bales. 13. What kind of combine was the wheat straw harvested with? Virtually all of our wheat straw was harvested with John Deere 9650 STS combines which will be “processed” slightly. We do however handle some straw that is harvested with a John Deere 9500 combine which would be commonly known as “conventional” straw. 14. Can I pay for hay with a credit card? Yes, we accept major credit cards and payment can be made online through a secure source after completing the contact form. You will create your own login and password to be used after speaking with us and an order is created.
